We are in the midst of a sea change within the world of mobile app development. Across the country within the app stores for both iOS and Android platforms, users are downloading and purchasing more business-related apps than ever before. What was once a realm dominated almost exclusively by game and entertainment-based apps now includes an influx of business, utility and productivity-based applications.

According to a report from XYO, from June 8th to July 9th 2013, 4.91% of all free app downloads by iPad users in Canada were for business, utility, or productivity-related apps. That’s over 127,000 downloads of business apps in a single month by Canadian users only. For paid apps downloaded during the same time period in Canada, the number of downloads for business, utility, or productivity-related apps rises to a staggering 10.39% of all paid apps downloaded by iPad users. This figure accounts for 83,900 paid business apps downloaded over a single month.

Android user download rates show an even more striking pattern with respect to business-related app downloads. During the same timeframe (June 8th to July 9th, 2013), a whopping 36.45% of all free app downloads were for business, utility (tools), or productivity-related apps from Android users in Canada. This translates to over 4,260,000 free business apps downloaded over a single month.   This figure surpasses the total number of apps downloaded for all game and entertainment-based apps combined in the same time period. In comparison, only 19.88% of Android free app downloads were for games, and 1.67% for entertainment apps during this period. For paid Android apps during this period in Canada, the number of downloads for business, utility (tools), or productivity-based apps was a combined 33.25% of all paid app downloads. This translates to over 20,300 paid business-related apps downloaded over a single month, out of a total of 61,100 paid apps. This means that one-third of all paid Android apps downloaded in Canada from June to July this year were business-related apps.

As these figures suggest, many companies are reaching out to software and mobile development agencies to help them realize their mobile vision and create strategic business apps. The consumer marketplace for mobile business apps has never been stronger than it is right now in Canada.
